KJUHSD has recently undergone several changes to its staff including the appointment of Ryan Walterman as the new Director of the Kingsburg Alternative Education Center.

Walterman hopes to build on the many great programs and services that KAEC provides for its students.

“I want to expand the opportunities that students have with access to vocational schools, ROP programs, and Career & Technical programs.  Also, I want to expand incentive programs for students who meet goals with regards to attendance, behavior, or credits.  Lastly, I am looking at creating more opportunities to communicate with parents via a Quarterly Newsletter about the great things going on at Alternative Education that they might not hear about otherwise, “ Walterman explained.

Before moving to KAEC, Walterman began working in the district in 2015. In fact, Walterman had much success as an Assistant Principal at Kingsburg High School. He helped lead and refine the PBIS program, earning it the PBIS Gold Award from FCOE.  In addition, he achieved his initial goal to reduce suspensions, expulsions and discipline referrals across the campus.

Besides helping KHS obtained recognition for PBIS, Walterman helped build a campus culture where everyone cares deeply for each other. Most notably, Walterman established the Student of the Semester Award which recognizes students who exemplify positive behaviors in academics, attendance, and community and school involvement.   

Walterman has been in education for 13 years. Previously he worked as a school administrator in the Dinuba Unified School District and a teacher in the Washington School District in Phoenix, Arizona.

Walterman was born and raised in Fresno, California and was very successful before beginning a career in education. He graduated from Clovis West High School and then continued onto Reedley College and graduated from Long Beach State University.

“My parents inspired me to pursue a career I would love and enjoy working in,” he voiced. “I always liked working with kids and when I was in college and finishing my education at Long Beach State, I decided I wanted to pursue a career in education.”

However, Walterman wasn’t always interested in education. Other career fields had his attention before he decided to pursue a career in administration. “Before deciding on a career in education, I was involved in business and finance and worked at a bank while I was in college.”

His interest in being able to change the lives of others is what drew him away from a career path in business and finance. “I wanted to connect with students and make a positive impact on them [students] and in their lives,” Walterman stated.

In addition, Walterman added that the opportunity to apply with KJUHSD was a dream come true. “I knew how great KJUHSD is and what great people they have working here, and I wanted to be a part of a great staff,” he voiced.

“Mr. Walterman brings a wealth of alternative education experience to KAEC.  He has a strong desire for students to succeed, regardless of their current situation.  KJUHSD is fortunate to have Mr. Walterman as the new Director of KAEC,” added KHS Principal Ryan Phelan.
